In meetings across Lagos, Nairobi, and Accra, these two terms are used interchangeably. They are not the same thing. Confusing them is expensive.
What Digital Marketing Is
Digital marketing is the use of digital channels — social media, email, search, display — to promote your product or service. It's execution-focused. It asks: 'How do we get our message in front of more people?'
Digital marketing is valuable. But by itself, it is not a growth strategy. It's a distribution layer.
What Growth Marketing Is
Growth marketing is a systematic approach to finding the most efficient, scalable ways to grow revenue. It's strategic and experimental. It asks a different set of questions:
- Where is the biggest constraint in our growth right now?
- Which acquisition channel has the best unit economics?
- What is our conversion rate at each stage, and why?
- What does retention look like, and what's it costing us in LTV?
- What experiments can we run to improve each of these?
The Core Difference
Digital marketing asks 'how do we do more?' Growth marketing asks 'where should we focus to get the highest return?'
A digital marketer optimizes your Instagram posts. A growth marketer might tell you to stop Instagram entirely because your email list converts 8x better.
Growth marketing is not about doing more. It's about doing the right things — the things that move the revenue needle — with less waste.
What African Businesses Actually Need
Most African businesses we work with have digital marketing execution. What they're missing is the growth strategy layer — the thinking that determines which execution to prioritize, what the metrics mean, and where the real leverage is.
If you're executing hard but not growing fast, you probably have a growth strategy problem, not a digital marketing problem.
